Choosing a format

WebP is the smallest of the three at comparable quality and supports transparency, so it is the usual choice for the web. JPG is the most widely compatible, but cannot store transparency — transparent areas become white. PNG is lossless, so converting to it preserves every pixel but usually increases file size.

Note on quality

Converting to JPG or WebP re-encodes a previously lossless PNG, so a little quality is traded away for a much smaller file. PNG output stays lossless and ignores the quality setting.
